Helping Latinas Understand Their Risk for Breast Cancer and Get Breast Cancer Care

About the Study

This study will teach Latinas with a high risk of breast cancer about how diet, exercise, ethnicity, genetics and screening and prevention guidelines may impact their likelihood for developing breast cancer. The study will test ways of teaching participants about breast cancer and risk factors, comparing the current standard of care to new personal educational sessions. Bilingual and bicultural staff are available for the phone study to make the study open to both English and Spanish speakers.

What the Study Involves

All participants will have three 30-minute phone calls with the study team over three weeks. Following the study, there will be a post test survey call and an end of study survey call.

This study involves 2 groups:

• Group 1
  • Patients will receive personalized information on breast health topics related to diet, exercise, genetic testing and screening and prevention guidelines.
• Group 2
  • Patients will receive available information on breast health topics related to diet, exercise, genetic testing and screening and prevention guidelines.

Women 30 years or older who:

• identify as Latina
• have a genetic risk factor, like a personal history of breast cancer or family history of breast or ovarian cancer
• have a risk factor, like financial struggles, trouble with transportation, exposure to violence, or difficulties with housing
• have not received genetic counseling or genetic testing for cancer risk
• ability to obtain breast cancer screening

Bilingual and bicultural staff are available for the phone study to make the study open to both English and Spanish speakers

Particants who do not meet at least one of the inclusion criteria above.
