How to Help > volunteer

event planning, support & fundraising

FORCE relies on donations and monies raised from our fundraising events to help support our programs. FORCE has several opportunities on a national and local level where volunteers can help us with our efforts.

Passing of the Torch

Passing of the Torch is a ceremony held in the fall in several cities which highlights the hereditary link between breast and ovarian cancer, honors cancer survivors and those at high risk, remembers those whose lives have been lost to cancer, and recognizes families that have been affected by cancer. FORCE raises money from the selling of luminaries which are displayed at the event. To learn more about Passing of the Torch, you can visit our Passing of the Torch web page and view a video overview of Passing of the Torch created from our 2006 events.

To learn if there is a Passing of the Torch near you, please contact Debbie Sokolov, Director of Development at debbies@facingourrisk.org. We are looking for volunteers to assist with creating luminaries, event logistics, and day of event support.

If you are not close to an event, you can still participate:

  • Sell Luminaries: Drop off information about luminaries (to be supplied by FORCE) at local businesses, doctor offices, etc.
  • Ask local businesses to host luminary challenges (getting employees to purchase luminaries).

Chat-a-thon

FORCE’s annual Chat-a-thon is held in early January. For two days, our chat rooms stay open around the clock with members from around the world reaching out to new members, the media, and each other. In addition to chatting, you can help support our Chat-a-thon by:

  • Signing up for a shift.
  • Sending information to local news outlets (FORCE will provide press releases that you can use or customize.)
  • Asking local businesses, doctors, or others to sponsor Chat Teams (i.e., Chattanooga Chatters). (Look for details on team challenges for next year’s Chat-a-thon coming next Winter)

To receive information on chat-a-thon and other FORCE events, please make sure you are subscribed to our FORCE newsletter or visit our website home page for updated announcements.

Other Fundraising Opportunities

Does your company offer matching funds or other corporate giving programs? Some companies provide opportunities for corporate donations or grant options to an employee’s chosen charity. Make your charity FORCE!

Do you sell something? Have a retail or online business? Consider donating a percentage of a special product or service.

Have an idea for a fundraising activity? Please send mail to fundraising@facingourrisk.org.
