Session: Reaching out to underserved communities

Speakers: Tuya Pal, MD; Susan Vadaparampil, PhD; Chanita Hughes Halbert, PhD

This 90-minute concurrent session will focus the barriers to providing genetic information and testing
to people in underserved communities and approaches to overcoming these barriers . Drs. Halbert,
Pal, and Vadaparampil will discuss:

• the prevalence of gene mutations in populations of different ethnicities
• the barriers to access to genetic counseling, testing, screening, and prevention for
  underserved populations
• research on addressing and overcoming these barriers
  

This session is appropriate for:

• people with interest in working to address disparity and reach out to high-risk individuals from
  underserved communities
• health care providers who provide care to survivors and people at high-risk for cancer
• patient advocates, support group facilitators, and people who work with survivors and people
  at high-risk for cancer
• social workers/mental health care professionals who treat survivors and people
  at high-risk for cancer
• people who work with the medically underserved towards reducing health care disparities
