Session: Reaching out to underserved communities

This 90-minute concurrent session will focus the barriers to providing genetic information and testing
to people in underserved communities and approaches to overcoming these barriers
. Drs. Halbert,
Pal, and Vadaparampil will discuss:
- the prevalence of gene mutations in populations of different ethnicities
- the barriers to access to genetic counseling, testing, screening, and prevention for
underserved populations
- research on addressing and overcoming these barriers
This session is appropriate for:
- people with interest in working to address disparity and reach out to high-risk individuals from
underserved communities
- health care providers who provide care to survivors and people at high-risk for cancer
- patient advocates, support group facilitators, and people who work with survivors and people
at high-risk for cancer
- social workers/mental health care professionals who treat survivors and people
at high-risk for cancer
- people who work with the medically underserved towards reducing health care disparities
