Session: Ovarian cancer prevention
Speaker: Diljeet Singh, MD
This 90-minute concurrent session will focus on risk-management methods for preventing
ovarian cancer in high-risk women. Dr. Singh will present:
- current recommendations for ovarian cancer surveillance in BRCA carriers
- limitations of screening for ovarian cancer in BRCA carriers
- agents that may reduce the risk for ovarian cancer in BRCA carriers
(OCPs and any new or prior research studies—ie-any available data
on fenretinide, Vitamin D, or other agents)
- surgical approaches to risk management—salpingo-oophorectomy, tubal ligation
- surgical risks, complications, and recovery time
- considerations regarding including hysterectomy with prophylactic oophorectomy
- importance of consulting with gynecologic-oncologist for preventive surgery and importance of
following standard-of-care guidelines for surgery (ie- serial sectioning)
This session is appropriate for:
- survivors and previvors who are considering prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy
- relatives/loved ones/caretakes of survivors and previvors considering prophylactic
oophorectomy
- health care providers who treat survivors and previvors
- social workers/mental health care professionals who treat survivors and previvors
