Session: Making decisions about cancer risk
Speaker: Karen Hurley, PhD; Ora Gordon, MD
This 90-minute concurrent session will focus on helping BRCA carriers or those
with hereditary cancer risk sort through their risk-management options to make
decisions that are right for them given their individual circumstances and where
they are in their life-path.
During this session, Drs. Hurley and Gordon will:
- outline standard-of-care risk-management options,
- help participants understand their immediate and lifetime risk for cancer
- assist participants in defining their priorities, goals, and timeline with
regards to cancer risk
management - help participants sort through their risk-management options to
make decisions that are right for their particular circumstances
- assist participants in determining a time-line for these decisions
- help participants cope with the emotional aspects of making these
decisions
This session is appropriate for:
- People who carry a BRCA mutation
or hereditary cancer in the family
and who are faced with making cancer risk management decisions
- Parents/relatives/loved ones of people making decisions about cancer risk
- Health care providers who provide care to people with BRCA mutations or hereditary
cancer risk
- Social workers/mental health care professionals who treat people with BRCA mutations
or hereditary cancer risk
