Session: Exercise and
fitness: effects on cancer risk, recurrence, lymphedema, and health
Speaker: Kathryn Schmitz, PhD
This 90-minute concurrent session will focus on the latest information and research on
the effects of exercise on cancer risk, cancer recurrence, and lymphedema.
Dr. Schmitz will
discuss:
- research showing the link between exercise and cancer risk for people with a
BRCA mutation or other hereditary cancer in the family
- research showing effects on survival for cancer survivors who exercise
- effects of exercise programs on lymphedema and lymphedema risk
- other benefits of exercise for cancer survivors and previvors
- the SISTERWISER study and any other related studies currently looking at exercise and
cancer risk
This session is appropriate for:
- previvors and survivors with a BRCA mutation or hereditary cancer in the family
- parents/relatives/loved ones of people with a BRCA mutation
or hereditary cancer in
the family
- health care providers who provide care to people with BRCA mutations
or hereditary
cancer in the family
- social workers/mental health care professionals who treat people with BRCA mutations
or hereditary cancer in the family
